To use, simply strike the match on the back of the matchbook cover and let it burn down about a quarter of an inch.  You will know it has burned down enough when it sputters and sparkles a bit.  Then just blow it out and hold it in your hand or drop it into an ashtray if one is available.  I find that they work best if you blow them out and then gently wave them around in the air.  If you place them in an ashtray it seems to work best if you place them carefully on their side so they will continue to smolder longer.
